Magazine

Magazines are read daily by millions of people. It is a collection of pictures, narrative writings, interviews and advertisement placed into one publication. For the most part, magazine writing communicates the truth and tells non-fictional stories of the world, although sometimes it may be argued otherwise, but nonetheless, it journals the current news and gossips for people of the world to see.

In my Writing and Rhetoric class, we were asked to bring in our own favorite magazine. I for one could not achieve that as I do no read magazines often so I shared a newspaper; the "Columbia Chronicles". I am a journalism major and has a regular habit of reading the paper. But many of my classmates brought in magazines of different sorts. Two earring rocking, tattoo having classmates, Austin and Devin, showcased the "AP" magazine, a publication that focuses on Music, and more specifically the Rock/Metal scene. Lauren, a beautiful looking girl who often times wear light colored outfits, had brought in the "Seventeen" magazine. Last but not least, Brian, a long haired, heavy metal musician who, although similar to that of Austin and Devin, enjoys darker metal (presumably), had brought in "The Game of Thrones" (GoT) a novel concerning the historical fantasy.

I believe each publication brought in by each of these individuals parallels each person's personalities. Austin and Devin both brought in the AP magazine which stands for "Alternative Press", representing and focusing on the Alternative music scene (being, differing from mainstream pop music). The magazine presents a lot of pictures of rock shows, new and upcoming bands and also veteran bands whom often times makes the majority of the publication. The advertisement presents, again, things of the alternate music scene for example, promoting new shows and sometimes even advertises musical equipments. The main point is that the publication's nature is similar to that of Austin and Devin. Of course their magazine would clearly reflect the readers' ideals and philosophy.

Seventeen magazine advertises a lot of female clothing, teenage shows and writes, often, of gossip about celebrities. What I believe links Lauren to this magazine is that her choice of clothing is quite similar to that of the pages on Seventeen magazine; brightly colored and very comforting. I guess (as I have only met Lauren for a short amount of time), her choice in publication is reflecting towards her femininity.

While it is hard to discuss and compare the novel "Game of Thrones" to Brian, I do believe it strikes me that Brian takes joy in things of the fantastical, yet, dark nature. He explained in class that GoT is a series that focuses on historical fantasy and also contains many things like sex and violence. The genre in which this book is presented as parallels to his fondness for (dark) heavy metal. I am not clear on the details but I do understand that heavy metal is quite a dark culture that sings of death, violence and sometimes even satanic cults. This, to me, shows how Brian would choose GoT as his favorite narrative.

Finally, myself. I brought in the Columbia Chronicle for a very simple reason - I am a journalism major and I am taking more time to read the news to allow myself a more knowledgable mind for discussions.

  1. I find it funny and interesting how we both associated how our our looks and initial judgements about one another matched about with what our magazines were about. I definitely agree that we all are very similar to our magazines. Great ideas!

  2. I may have exaggerated on the sex and violence in Game of Thrones, haha. But it's a fairly realistic book, for fantasy.
